Former astronaut and U.S. Senator John Glenn laid in repose Friday, Dec. 16, 2016, at the Ohio Statehouse for the public to pay its respects. NASA photographer Bill Ingalls was there to photograph the event.
Glenn was only the ninth person to be lain in state in Ohio, a list that includes Abraham Lincoln. The public was able to view his flag-draped casket and pay their respects. Glenn died Dec. 8, 2016, at the age of 95.
This was the first of a series of memorials for him. At 2 p.m. Saturday afternoon, after being escorted by 40 Marines in a public processional, a public memorial service will occur at Ohio State University. Vice President Joe Biden and NASA Administrator Charles Bolden are expected to attend and speak. The event will be streamed on NASA TV.
The following photos were taken by NASA photographer Bill Ingalls. More photos of the event can be found here.
