SpaceX conducted its seventh flight under the $1.6 billion Commercial Resupply Services (CRS) contract that the Hawthorne, California-based company has signed with NASA. The flight of the CRS-7 mission began on June 28, 2015 from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station's Space Launch Complex 40 (SLC-40) located in Florida. The payload for this mission was SpaceX's Dragon spacecraft with an estimated 4,000 lbs (1,800 kg) worth of experiments crew supplies and cargo bound for the International Space Station. Liftoff took place at 10:21 a.m. EST (14:21 GMT) under mostly clear skies. Approximately two minutes and 19 seconds into the flight, a failure with a strut in the rocket’s second stage caused the complete loss of the Falcon 9 v1.1 rocket, the Dragon spacecraft and the payload it carried.
