NASA’s Deep Space Climate Observatory (DSCOVR) was originally developed by then-Vice President Al Gore in 1998 was launched from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station’s Space Launch Complex 40 (SLC-40) located in Florida. The spacecraft was launched via a SpaceX Falcon 9 v1.1.rocket on February 11, 2015. The mission has a long history going by both other official names (Triana) as well as unofficial ones (GoreSat). DSCOVR now resides some 930,000 miles (1,500,000 kilometers) from Earth where it monitors solar wind conditions, provides early warning of approaching coronal mass ejections as well as to observe conditions on Earth such as changes in ozone, aerosols, dust and other phenomenon.
