BAIKONUR, Kazakhstan -- Roscosmos launched the MS-10 Soyuz spacecraft toward the International Space Station atop a Soyuz-FG rocket at 2:40 p.m. local time (5:40 a.m. EDT/9:40 GMT) on Oct. 11, 2018. Cosmonaut Aleksey Ovchinin and NASA astronaut Nick Hague lifted off under the gaze of both the NASA and Roscosmos administrators (Jim Bridenstine and Dmitry Rogozin). About two minutes into the flight an anomaly occurred, with the MS-10 spacecraft’s steering rockets being used by the crew to conduct a ballistic abort. Both crew members touched down in the desert a short distance from the launch site. Photos courtesy: Michael Cole
