NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) and Lunar Crater Observation and Sensing Satellite (LCROSS) mission lifted off atop a United Launch Alliance Atlas V 401 rocket from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station's Space Launch Complex 41 in Florida on June 18, 2009. The dual mission was launched as a pathfinder effort under NASA's Vision for Space Exploration program. The probe has since produced a 3D map of the lunar surface at 100-meter resolution and 98.2 percent coverage (excluding polar areas in deep shadow), this included 0.5-meter resolution images of the Apollo landing sites. The mission cost an estimated $583 million in U.S. dollars. Photos courtesy: Carleton Bailie
