On August 31, 2010, NASA and ATK (now Orbital ATK) conducted a static test fire of the five segment solid rocket motor that is planned for use on the space agency's new Space Launch System (SLS) super heavy-lift launch vehicle. The test, conducted in Promontory, Utah, was heralded by several tours of ATK's facilities where the aerospace company showcased the tools, facilities and personnel that produce the machines that are scheduled to be used on the agency's efforts to send astronauts to deep space destinations.
